Velocity's Story

Born from a passion for engineering and a love of the ride. This is who we are.

The Beginning

A Garage, a Dream, and a Welding Torch

Velocity Bikes started in 2012 in a small garage in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Founder James Carter, a mechanical engineer and lifelong cyclist, was frustrated by the gap between mass-market bikes and truly race-ready machines.

He set out to build something different: bikes that combined aerospace-grade engineering with the soul of a hand-built machine. The first Velocity prototype was welded by hand, tested on the steep climbs of the Peak District, and refined through countless iterations.

Our Journey

Key Milestones

From a garage startup to a globally recognised bike brand. Here is how the ride unfolded.

2012

The First Frame

James Carter builds the first Velocity prototype in his Sheffield garage. Tested on Winnats Pass and the Snake Pass, it immediately attracts attention from local riders.

2014

First Workshop

Demand outgrows the garage. Velocity moves into its first proper workshop in Kelham Island, Sheffield, and hires a team of five frame builders.

2016

Carbon Revolution

Launch of the Aero SL, our first full-carbon road frame. The bike wins multiple industry awards and puts Velocity on the national stage.

2018

Going Off-Road

The Terra gravel range launches, followed by the Trail Pro mountain bike. Velocity proves it can dominate any terrain, not just tarmac.

2020

Electric Future

Introduction of the E-Motion range with a fully integrated battery system. Partnership with leading motor manufacturers sets a new benchmark for e-bike performance.

2023

New Headquarters

Velocity opens its 20,000 sq ft headquarters and showroom in Sheffield, including state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and a fitting studio.

2026

The Next Chapter

With 12 bike ranges, 92 team members, and riders in 28 countries, Velocity continues to push the boundaries of what a bike can be.

What Drives Us

Engineering Without Compromise

Every Velocity bike starts as a set of performance targets, not a price point. We engineer from the rider backwards: aerodynamics, stiffness, compliance, and weight are optimised before we even think about cost.

Our in-house team of 12 engineers uses computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, and hundreds of hours of real-world testing to ensure every frame meets our exacting standards. If it does not ride like a Velocity should, it does not ship.

Our People

Riders Building Bikes for Riders

Our team is made up of engineers, designers, and riders. Most of us commute by bike, race on weekends, and spend our holidays exploring new routes. We are not building bikes in a vacuum; we are building bikes we want to ride.

From the frame builder who rides the Peak District every morning to the aerodynamicist who races time trials, every Velocity team member brings real riding experience to the engineering process.
